“It was a pleasure for me to attend and speak at the conference. I recognized what big differences there are between different countries and hospitals. Because we have different backgrounds, experiences and knowledge it is sometimes hard to understand each other and understand problems that each of us have. I hope that with this organization we all will move on to better understanding and better nursing for HIV patients.”

HIV Nursing across Europe—
practice and research

Helping to build a network to educate, inform and support European nurses engaged in the care of people living with HIV
10 & 11 April 2008, Sofitel Victoria Hotel, Warsaw, Poland

  • Events and small sessions to promote networking and exchange
  • Information and training on crucial issues of HIV treatment and research
  • Displays of pertinent research projects and training opportunities.
  • Planning for future activities

Today the number of people living with HIV in Europe is estimated to be around 2.4 million and rising. Their care and support and the prevention of new infections present significant challenges.

It is vital that European nurses have access to the most up-to-date resources and information concerning HIV and are culturally and socially prepared in order that quality of care is maximised, HIV stigma prevented, and the goal of universal access to treatment and care for all people living with HIV by 2010, agreed by all UN member countries, remains a reality.

This is especially crucial in the European East, where the rapid increase of HIV infections amongst injection drug users and others, coupled with already over-burdened health systems, is putting immense pressure on health care workers.

A new network to meet these challenges is being developed by an interim planning committee comprising of nurses with extensive experience in HIV prevention, care and research from a range of European countries.

Outcomes will include improved training for nurses, support for AIDS research European-wide, and (hopefully) the establishment of a European-wide nurses association with a special focus on those engaged in HIV research.

This project is initiated by the Interim planning committee for a new European organisation for nurses in HIV care with organisational and financial support provided by HIVTRI.
