HIV and Ageing
Krakow, Poland, 26–27 June 2008
Background
The numbers of older individuals diagnosed
and living with HIV continues to rise and is producing challenges
for both HIV physicians, who have had little exposure to care-of-the-elderly
medicine and their geriatrician counterparts who have seen few
patients with HIV.
There are many issues to consider. How should we best care
for and treat HIV patients over 60? How does ageing affect
people with HIV? How does one distinguish between HIV-related
symptoms and age-related conditions? How can one best avoid
poly-pharmacy and the increase in potential drug-drug interactions
or side effects? Also what are the social implications of
an ageing HIV population?
The meeting
A panel of experts was convened to discuss
various issues surrounding HIV and Ageing. A report from
the meeting will be posted soon.
Work on this project will continue at Glasgow HIV9
in November with the aim to develop useful materials for patients and HIV
doctors, gerontologists and specialists to enable best quality
care for the ageing HIV patient.
