HIV AND HEPATITIS C:
SCYLLA IS SLAIN – CHARYBDIS REMAINS
The HIVTRI Science and Innovation Lectures 2008
The Wellcome Institute London May 2008
Speakers:
Dr Daria Hazuda, Merck Research Laboratories, Whitehouse Station,NJ,USA
Dr Michael Miller, Gilead Sciences, Foster City, California,USA

The challenge of the HIV/HBC epidemic has mustered an amazing
response for academia and the pharmaceutical industry to develop
diagnostics and therapies which have revolutionized the therapy
options and turned a near death sentence into a chronic but manageable
condition. Do we have the tools and the treatments for the larger and
arguably more insidious epidemic of hepatitis C and how can the
lessons of the last 25 years be built upon to bring us nearer to living
with these viral challengers.
Three speakers of immense scientific stature presented the latest
development plans for HIV and viral hepatitis drugs and novel
therapeutics to suppress and perhaps one day to slay these
viruses. They were cross-examined by a panel of experts from
academia and clinical medicine as well as the assembled audience.
